Functions are making a workflow slower
So functions and linked group addresses seem like a good idea but we're finding them slowing down the workflow.
Key issues:
1 - automatic GA assignment is frustrating as you have to delete the automatic groups and then create the links to the correct ones. It's way too early to be automatically assigning essentially a flat structure -we need to be able to map a function to a structure of our own making.
2 - No easy way of moving groups between functions or deleting the assignment. For example, we programmed a bunch of loads on one actuator to a set of functions only to be told the wiring had changed and things had to be moved. The device channel/GA association was easy unlinked but each function keeps the GA association. These have to be removed/moved manually.
What would help in this case if there was an actual tie between a device channel and a function that implied the GA link. At the moment the GA is the link but there is no useful functionality in the interface to make those associations managed easily.
I understand this is work in progress but I see this as critical to the ongoing growth of KNX. I love KNX but it really is the least intuitive system to develop with, especially if focused on lighting, shading and HVAC control. It's only a matter of time before Lutron, RAKO, Crestron etc will be using AI to describe an installation and getting the programming done automatically. If ETS fails to keep up and become super intuitive then the cost/benefit for using KNX will look increasingly compromised.
