Streamlined Group Address Management
Problem Statement:
The current group address management system in ETS Software, which requires manual creation and drag-and-drop assignment, is time-consuming, complex, lacks debuggability and feels unwieldly. This can hinder the efficiency and makes implementing KNX-Solutions unneccessary expensive.
Proposed Solution:
Implement a more modern and intuitive data flow interface reminiscent of Node-Red or Apache NiFi. This would optionally replace the current system with a streamlined approach that clearly visualizes data flow between source and destination objects. This would enhance the usability mangaging KNX-group addresses while preserving the familiar workflow for experienced users.
Specific Recommendations:
-
Data Flow Visualization: Implement a data flow visualization interface that mimics Node-Red or Apache NiFi. This will provide a clear overview of the system's interactions and simplify the identification and troubleshooting of issues.
-
Automatic Group Address Management: Introduce an optional feature that automates the process of creating and assigning group addresses. This feature could optionally hide group addresses altogether and make them purely ETS internal. This would save professionals time and effort, particularly for complex systems.
-
Retain Manual Control: Ensure that the automatic group address management feature remains optional, allowing professionals to choose their preferred workflow. This will cater to both experienced users and those who prefer manual control.
-
Integrated Debug Interface: Integrate the debug interface directly into the main user interface for seamless access and troubleshooting. This will further enhance the efficiency and usability of the group address management system.
Benefits:
-
Reduced Complexity: The new data flow interface will simplify group address management, making it more efficient and intuitive to use.
-
Enhanced Efficiency: Automating group address creation and assignment will save professionals time and effort, particularly for large or intricate systems.
-
Flexibility: The optional approach allows professionals to choose between automated and manual workflows, catering to their preferences and expertise.
- Flawlessness: The automatic group address managment system in combination with its enhanced visualization will create a workflow which is less prone to errors and misconfigurations.
-
Streamlined Troubleshooting: The integrated debug interface will facilitate the identification and resolution of issues, improving overall system stability.
Overall Impact:
By implementing these recommendations, the ETS group address management system will be significantly enhanced, making it more user-friendly, efficient, and flexible. This will empower professionals to effectively manage complex KNX systems and ensure optimal performance.

Anything to streamline the management of GAs will benefit the success of KNX.

I thought ETS6 had a feature which permitted the creation of multiple group addresses from a selection of group objects but I could not find it the other day. Maybe I dreamed it? I will create a ticket for this.

I fully agree and support regarding GAs. I wish they should be hidden and semantic metadata should be used instead. Who cares about GAs today? It's like building advanced IP plans for computers and other IT stuff with fixed IP addresses on corporate networks, that was maybe done in the 90's, not today!
