limiting caracters in project with old plugin

I have sometimes trouble importing / exporting projects to from archive and file. This do to old plugin and the are some naming on products or group addresses with more than 50 characters. 

I wish for a possibility to activate a limit on this fields to limit this on project where this is useful, prefer on project setting, can also be om ETS setting with choses: newer, always or on project with plugin.
