An offline theoretical exam is taken using the KNX Offline Exam Tool and individual exam files generated for each student.
Unlike an online theoretical exam, an offline theoretical exam may be composed a few days before the exam day.
Before composing the exam
The following requirements apply:
- The exam shall be taken in the presence of a KNX certified tutor.
- The Theoretical exam organization field in the course properties shall be set to Offline.
- The training centre shall provide each student with the KNX Offline Exam Tool and their individual exam file.
- The KNX tutor shall ensure that each student receives the correct individual exam file.

1. Open the course
In MyKNX, go to Account → Training Centre → Courses
Locate the applicable course. Make sure that Theoretical exam organization in the course properties is set to Offline.
2. Open the student overview
Click the person icon next to the course. The students registered for the course will be displayed.
3. Select the students taking the exam
Select the students for whom an offline theoretical exam shall be composed.
4. Compose the exam
Click Compose Exam. Once the exam has been composed, a download icon is displayed next to the selected student(s).
This indicates that an individual offline exam has been generated for each selected student.
5. Download the exam files
Click the applicable download icons to download the individual offline exam files. Each student receives an individual .knxexam file. The training centre shall ensure that the correct exam file is assigned to the correct student.
6. Provide the Offline Exam Tool and exam file
Provide each student with:
- their individual .knxexam exam file; and
- the extracted KNX Offline Exam Tool.
The KNX Offline Exam Tool contains:
- changelog.txt; and
- knx-examtool-signed.exe.
The KNX tutor shall extract these files before providing the tool to the student.
7. Conduct the exam
The student opens their individual exam file using the KNX Offline Exam Tool and completes the theoretical exam. The exam shall be taken in the presence of a KNX certified tutor.
8. Collect the exam files
After the exam has been completed, the KNX tutor shall collect the following files from each student's Exam folder:
- answers-KNXxxxxxx.knxexam
- exam-KNXxxxxxx.knxexam
Both files shall be removed from the student's computer after collection so that they are no longer available to the student.
9. Upload the answer files to MyKNX
The KNX tutor shall upload the collected answers-KNXxxxxxx.knxexam files to the training centre's MyKNX account. In MyKNX, open the applicable course and click the person icon to access the upload field.
10. Enter the practical exam result, if applicable
If the KNX course also includes a practical exam, enter the practical exam result in MyKNX. Click the magnifying glass next to the student and enter the practical exam result. After entering the result, click Confirm results.
Certificate and voucher
After the results have been confirmed, the student automatically receives an email informing them that a new KNX certificate is available, provided that the student has successfully completed the applicable course and exam requirements.
Where applicable, the student is also informed about the corresponding ETS voucher.
The student can download the KNX certificate after completing the KNX satisfaction survey.
