A KNX-certified training centre must always ensure that students are trained using the latest version of ETS Professional or ETS Lite during certified courses. The three options for ensuring that students have access to the most recent version of ETS are explained below:
Option 1: Using a student's cloud-based license (recommended)
Option 2: Using ETS cloud-based licenses provided by the training centre
Option 3: Using ETS dongle-based licenses provided by the training centre
Option 1: Using a student's cloud-based license (recommended)
Using a cloud-based ETS license requires a stable internet connection in the classroom. The training centre must ensure that connectivity is reliable before opting for this method.
How it works:
- Upon enrolling in a certified course, each student receives a free ETS Lite cloud-based license, valid for the duration of the course plus an additional three months after confirmation by the training centre.
- Students can activate their temporary personal cloud-based ETS Lite license by following the guidelines outlined in ETS6 licensing.
Why choose this option?
We highly recommend this method as it ensures a smooth login process. To prepare for this setup, consider the following:
- If the training centre has pre-installed ETS software on its computers:
- The students can simply activate their ETS Lite license on a training centre computer using their personal MyKNX credentials. The students must log out after every session if the computer is used by other users during the day.
- The students can simply activate their ETS Lite license on a training centre computer using their personal MyKNX credentials. The students must log out after every session if the computer is used by other users during the day.
- If students are allowed to bring personal laptops:
- They can activate their ETS Lite license on their own laptop by logging in with their personal MyKNX credentials.
- They can activate their ETS Lite license on their own laptop by logging in with their personal MyKNX credentials.
Option 2: Using ETS cloud-based licenses provided by the training centre
A training centre can use its pool of ETS Lite cloud-based licenses from its organization account to provide students with access to the ETS software.
Before the course begins, ensure that the ETS software is installed on all training centre computers.
Recommended steps for a smooth setup
1. Create MyKNX accounts
- The training centre must create individual MyKNX accounts for each training rig (one per rig).
- A standardized naming system is recommended (e.g., TC-Rig1@..., TC-Rig2@...)
- Tutors must have access to the credentials for these MyKNX accounts.
2. Linking MyKNX accounts to the training centre
- Each MyKNX account must be connected to the training centre’s organization account. All MyKNX accounts created for each training rig are displayed in the organization account under the submenu "Members".
- This centralized approach simplifies license management and reassignment.
3. Assigning Licenses
- The tutor must assign each ETS Lite license to the corresponding MyKNX account (created for each training rig).
- Each training rig account will only have access to the licenses assigned to it.
Important considerations:
-
Avoid these common mistakes:
- Do not assign all licenses to one MyKNX account and do not use it across multiple training rigs. If this account has other licenses or apps, they will appear in ETS and may be misused.
- Do not use the tutor’s personal account on any training rig. This could expose sensitive training centre data.
-
ETS Session:
- As long as the student does not log out of ETS, the session remains active, and credentials do not need to be re-entered during the course.
- The session expires in 30 days, after which the training centre must log in again and repeat the licensing process.
Option 3: Using ETS dongle-based licenses provided by the training centre
If the training centre lacks a stable internet connection in the classroom, dongle-based ETS licenses are a more suitable option.
How it works:
- The ETS dongle-based licenses belong to the training centre.
- The dongles, which contain the ETS licenses, can be:
- Plugged into the training centre’s computers via USB.
- Given to students for use on their personal laptops (if allowed to bring their own laptop) during the certified course.
Important notes on dongle-based licenses:
- Since no creation or administration of MyKNX accounts is required for dongle-based licenses, it is crucial to ensure the dongles are not lost or stolen.
- Dongle-based ETS6 Lite discontinuation:
- Dongle-based licenses for ETS6 Lite are no longer available as of January 2022.
- Dongle-based licenses are only available for ETS6 Professional.
