A company that wishes to develop a KNX compatible product that is configurable in ETS (Engineering Tool Software) and branded with the KNX logo shall meet certain requirements prior to launching this product on the market:
- Become a KNX member as explained in Become a KNX Member. The majority of the KNX Association’s Executive Board shall approve the application for membership in case the candidate applies for shareholdership, else the team of KNX directors.
- Sign the IPR License agreement (text of which may be obtained from KNX Association on request). The IPR License agreement governs the handling of intellectual property rights owned by the member companies of KNX Association, which are necessary for the development of a device compatible with the KNX Standard.
- Sign the Trademark license agreement (text of which may be obtained from KNX Association on request). The Trademark license agreement governs the use of the KNX trademark on registered/certified products. Should the company decide to renounce its membership in KNX Association, according to the stipulations of the Trademark License Agreement it also renounces its right to use the KNX trademark, even if its registered and/or certified products (continue to) comply with the KNX requirements. The design rules for applying the KNX trademark on products are part of the item "Resources" as part of the Member menu in MyKNX.
- Assign the 'Certification Coordinator' role to the person who will manage the product registration/certification in MyKNX.
- Request a unique manufacturer code as explained in Manufacturer Code. This manufacturer code shall be stored in the BAU’s memory and is checked by the ETS when downloading application products: only if both correspond, will ETS carry out the download procedure.
- If wishing to design an ETS Device Configuration App, an application to become a KNX ETS App developer needs to be launched in the section “Account”, item “Applications” in the member account in MyKNX.
- Buy the latest version of the KNX Manufacturer Tool: This tool is required for creating ETS product data entries, i.e. knxprod files. If necessary, this work can be subcontracted to another member or licensee. Until further notice, such a KNX product data entry is waived for E-Mode compatible products. However, after a maximum of 6 months after the availability of the ETS extensions able to handle E-Mode, the applicant is obliged to deliver the required database entry. If he fails to do so, KNX Association has the right to withdraw an already granted certificate.
The purchase of the available KNX conformity test tools is not obligatory, but highly recommended. - Comply to ISO 9001 in the Scope "Design, Manufacturing and final product inspection/testing"
- Exception 1: In case the KNX member has developed a Main product of which the stack and physical layer is already certified, then the KNX member does not have to be ISO 9001 certified; in this case, the KNX member must take recourse to a subcontractor that complies with ISO 9001 for the above-mentioned scope.
- Exception 2: In case the candidate member wants to sell OEM products, then it is not required that this company is ISO 9001 certified.
