For realizing the communication between the bus and any random microcontroller, it is required to have a certified physical layer implementation (transceiver or chip) on board. In the case that a KNX member wants to register such a physical layer implementation, the following completed documents shall be submitted to KNX Association (forms are available on the KNX Cloud):
- KNX Protocol implementation conformance statement:
- General
- Common
- Supported medium (incl. information on optional supported features)
- Company internal test report, showing that the manufacturer has already tested the compliance to the relevant KNX requirements. An appropriate date for a subsequent KNX product audit shall be scheduled by contacting the Certification department.
Types of TP physical layer implementations
Two types of physical layer implementations can be distinguished:
Digital transceivers
These transceivers represent a certified implementation for the complete physical layer and for (part of) the data link layer of the KNX communication protocol. Examples are given on the KNX website.
Analog transceivers
These transceivers represent a certified implementation for only the physical layer of the KNX communication protocol. Some of these analog transceivers may be realized as ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) or with Discrete components (e.g., transistors). Examples are given on the KNX website.
Types of RF physical layer implementations
Examples of RF physical layer implementations can be found on the KNX website.
