What is ETS?
ETS (Engineering Tool Software) is the official, manufacturer-independent software from the KNX Association for configuring and commissioning KNX installations. Since KNX is an open standard, ETS can be used to integrate and program devices from any KNX-certified manufacturer within a single project — it's used by system integrators, electricians, and engineers to design, program, and maintain KNX-based building automation systems, covering applications such as lighting, heating, shading, security, and energy management.
What ETS does
With ETS, you can:
- Design the topology of a KNX installation (lines, areas, and devices)
- Import product data from any KNX manufacturer via application programs
- Configure device parameters and group addresses
- Define interactions and automate functions based on your project's needs
- Commission, test, document, and maintain projects over their lifetime
License types
ETS6 is available in three tiers, each suited to different needs:
- ETS6 Professional – Available as both a cloud or dongle license. No limit on the number of projects or participants; intended for professional integrators.
- ETS6 Home – Available as a cloud license only. Supports one project at a time, with up to 64 participants; designed for homeowners.
- ETS6 Lite – Available as a cloud license only. Supports unlimited projects, with up to 20 participants.
Activation methods
Depending on the license, ETS can be activated in two ways:
- Dongle-based activation – the license is stored on a physical USB dongle.
- Cloud-based activation – the license is linked to your MyKNX account and requires a stable internet connection.
Where to get it
ETS can be purchased and downloaded through the MyKNX shop. For detailed pricing per license type, see License Models & Prices. A free trial version is also available for those who want to explore the software before purchasing (limited to 5 devices).
