Overview
This article explains recent changes in how unregistered KNX products are handled in ETS, outlines the potential impact on manufacturers and customers, and provides clear guidance for manufacturers on how to comply with KNX policies.
Background
Unregistered KNX products - typically distributed as .knxprod or .knxproj files - have historically been used by manufacturers to allow field testing prior to official registration. These products were shared without the KNX logo and were not submitted for certification.
However, it has been observed that some manufacturers provided these unregistered products to customers with or without the KNX logo without formally registering them with KNX Association.
Changes introduced in ETS 6.3.0
Starting with ETS version 6.3.0, the behavior of unregistered KNX products has changed significantly:
- Products not submitted for certification will display a yellow exclamation mark in the Tree/Details view.
- A warning indicator will appear in the ETS sidebar.
- These devices remain parameterizable, but
- They can no longer be copied and pasted within the same ETS project or to other ETS projects.
Previous ETS behavior (up to ETS 6.2.2):
Unregistered products were fully functional and parameterizable. These products could be copied and pasted both within the same ETS project and across different projects.
What should manufacturers do?
If customers report issues with unregistered products, manufacturers are advised to follow these steps:
-
Provide Device Tester Licenses
You may issue tester licenses to some of your customers:- These tester licenses are intended only for non-commercial products without the KNX logo.
- Their sole purpose is product testing
-
Submit products for official registration
All distributed products should be submitted to KNX Association for formal registration.- Once registered, you have 6 months to complete testing at a KNX accredited test lab.
KNX Association Policy
To mitigate the spread of unregistered products and maintain the integrity of the KNX ecosystem, the KNX Association will not provide support for unregistered products found on the market in accordance with the terms outlined in the KNX Software License Agreement.
