In order to transfer a KNX project from the Commissioning PC to the mounted KNX devices, the ETS user needs to perform a Download. This step can only be realized after the bus interface settings have been carried out.
Download
For carrying out this task, ETS offers several download variants, the usage of which depends on the installer’s needs and on the configuration status of the devices. ETS distinguishes between the following download parts of a KNX device:
- Individual address
- Application program(s)
- Group addresses (more precisely, group addresses and the links between group objects, the tables)
- Parameters
Download Flags
ETS decides on the basis of a number of flags (e.g. in the Topology, Buildings, or Devices Panel) whether a download is complete or if only some parts still need to be downloaded. The flags are shown in the List view, typically called 'Download Status'. The flags have the following meanings:
Icons
Initial state (never downloaded before) or downloaded, but corresponding property changed (might need re-downloading)
Download OK |
Flag/Shortcut
Adr | Individual Address loaded
Prg | Application Program(s) loaded
Par | Parameters loaded | |
Grp | Group addresses + links between the group objects (called 'associations') loaded
Cfg | Medium type specific settings loaded (used only on the medium PL and RF and set when downloading the individual address) |
Download Variants
In order to perform a download, select the item(s) you want to download and select Download:
- in the Commissioning menu in the Menu bar or
- via right-click on mouse.
The following options are available:
Button | Comment | Involved flags |
Download All | All project data in ETS will be downloaded into the corresponding device(s).
|
Adr, Prg, Par, Grp |
Download Partial |
ETS will download only the parts that were changed in ETS and have not been downloaded before. ETS distinguishes between two parts:
|
Par, Grp |
Download Individual Address |
Assigns the individual address to a KNX device. See Download Individual Address. |
Adr |
Overwrite Individual Address |
Assigns the individual address to a KNX device by overwriting a known address. This function avoids having to physically press the download button on the device. This option is only available if a single device is selected.
|
Adr |
Download Application | Will download the application program into the device. | Prg |
Depending on the KNX device behavior, a change of the device parameters can hide group objects or reveal additional ones. This is a normal behavior, e.g. to allow changing the functionality of a product by parameterization. Some of the group objects linked with group addresses will no longer be shown (the previous link becomes invalid), but the previous group address is still valid in the KNX device (as set during the previous download) and needs to be modified by redownloading the application.
Download Individual Address
For the device(s) concerned, and if they support the feature of the KNX Serial Number, it is possible to download the Individual Address without physically pressing the download button on the device(s).
To add a KNX Serial Number, select a device and move your mouse cursor next to the 'Serial Number' field. Then click the 'pencil' icon to insert the device's KNX Serial Number.
Then, add the KNX Serial Number of the device, which is usually available as a sticker on the device and press the 'Set Serial Number' button to save.
Once the KNX Serial Number is added, it is shown on the sidebar.
If you need to modify it or clear it, move your mouse cursor over the 'pencil' icon again
and click it to open the 'Edit Serial Number' dialog.
On this dialog you can either:
- clear an already added KNX Serial Number
- set a new KNX Serial Number
- or cancel the action
For devices that do not support the feature of the KNX Serial Number, you will be asked, in the Pending Operations Sidebar, to physically press the download button on the device(s).
Display of download process
When the download process is started, the Pending Operations container will automatically be activated in the Sidebar. You can also monitor the download process by viewing the KNX bus traffic in the respective Monitors.
When downloading multiple devices that support the KNX Serial Number feature, you can select the option 'Try using the serial number for the remaining devices' so that you do not have to press the programming button on the device.
Download behavior
The download process in ETS operates in the background. Please note that:
- It is possible to continue working in ETS during the entire download process.
- Devices that are being downloaded are protected against changes by the ETS user. Therefore, these devices cannot be edited during the download process, e.g. by modifying the parameters.
More information on the:
- changes and reset process of Download flags

is explained in Download functions (Detailed).
