Each device not complying with the System 1 profile that is shipped out shall have a unique KNX Serial Number. The KNX Serial Number is composed of 6 octets:
- Octets 6 and 5 contain the KNX Manufacturer Code.
- Octets 4 to 1 are to be managed by the manufacturer himself
- a manufacturer may e.g. structure this according to production site, date, series, batch…etc.
The manufacturer has to make sure that – within his product range – all shipped devices have a unique KNX Serial Number. Parallel to the KNX Serial Number, if desired the manufacturer may have his own classic serial number that can be printed on the product box etc.
KNX Serial Number for OEM products
Products shipped to OEM customers shall also have a unique KNX Serial Number. The Main manufacturer and OEM customer need to agree on a common procedure, ensuring that the serial number is unique so that there are no conflicts in the field. Practical solutions:
- Main manufacturer is responsible for creation of the KNX Serial Number of the OEM product.
In this case, there is no problem, as the Main manufacturer will ensure that unique serial numbers are assigned to each KNX Main and OEM product. - The Main manufacturer sends to the OEM customer products where the KNX Serial Number is empty. The OEM customer reprograms the devices with his KNX Serial Number. The OEM customer will have in this case full control over keeping the number behind his manufacturer code unique.
